MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two Russian politicians are demanding the United States be kicked out of this year's World Cup and has its membership of world soccer's governing body FIFA terminated.
The petition to FIFA was made by Aleksandr Sidyakin and Mikhail Markelov, deputies from the Russian State Duma, which is the country's lower parliament house.
The politicians cite aggressive actions against Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya as well as attempts to encroach on Syria, as reasons for asking for the ban.
Sidyakin said the written demand was a reaction to a letter sent by American Republican senators Mark Kirk and Dan Coates asking FIFA to exclude Russia from the 2014 World Cup.
"It's an eye for an eye, a ball for a ball. Don't let the USA take part in the 2014 World Cup! End their membership of FIFA," Sidyakin wrote on Twitter.
Well I totally called this. I told you Russia was out looking for another Cold War. Can’t ignore aggression like this. Nothing else happening in the world right now signifies Russian aggression like wanting to kick the U.S. out of the World Cup. And I'll be damned if I'm gonna stand by and just let it happen.
To be totally honest, I couldn’t care less about soccer, but the World Cup is different. This is an opportunity to get black out drunk during the day and yell shit at the TV even though I have no idea what's going on. Isn't that what America is all about? How dare you to try to take that away from me Russia?
Love the fact that Russia is trying to throw around political clout like they’re still the Soviet Union, too. No one is intimidated by the name Russia - Change it back to Soviet Union and maybe the world will start feeling some red scare again.
And they're citing aggressive U.S. actions against Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya as the reason to kick the U.S. out of the World Cup? You just invaded Crimea like a week ago, bro.
PS - The saying is now officially "An eye for an eye, a ball for a ball." Too funny not to catch on.
