CARTHAGE,
Miss. -- A girls' high school basketball coach in Mississippi has resigned,
police say, after being accused of biting a player in the face. Leake County
Sheriff Greg Waggoner says Leake Academy coach Doyle Wolverton is accused of
biting a player during a timeout in a Nov. 12 game in Marion County.
Toby
Thaggard filed the report on behalf of his daughter, whose name was not
released. The report alleges that Wolverton grabbed the player "by the
shirt and then bit her on the right side of the face" after a bad play,
the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported.
Last
year, Wolverton became the No. 2 all-time winningest girls' high school
basketball coach, trailing only Leta Andrews of Granbury, Texas. The Neshoba
Democrat reported Wolverton coached at Leake Academy in Madden for 38 years and
has more than 1,200 career wins.
Some people want to win. They
like to win. Winning is fun. Some people need to win – and that’s Doyle
Wolverton. You don’t get 1,200 wins if you’re not willing to assault your point
guard after a lazy turnover. But hey, that's what's so crazy about coaching - until this little incident you know Doyle Wolverton was a town hero. Probably a semi-celebrity in Carthage, Mississippi. Now he's all over the news for being an abusive coach and his career will be tarnished forever. Then again, Bobby Knight choked out one of his players and
he’s still regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game.
Seriously though, I get that
it’s probably frowned upon for a coach to go Mike Tyson on one of his players,
but at the same time I think it’s pretty clear that Coach Wolverton just needed
to be #1 on that list. He didn’t want to be #1. He needed it. How do you think he got to 1,200 wins in the first place? If you’re not
gonna take care of the ball, he’s gonna eat your ear right off the side of your
fucking head. Pretty simple really.
